Implantable Lenses - Surgical Contact Lenses
As you probably already know, lasik is not suitable for everyone. In fact some candidates will never be eligible for any type of laser surgery so does that mean you are stuck with glasses and contact lenses for the rest of your life? The answer is no. There is a procedure surgical implantable lenses, also known as phakic IOLs, which will allow you to gain better vision without having to wear glasses or contact lenses anymore. This type of non-laser alternative may prove to be effective as it is relatively safe with low risks of complications. They are surgically implanted introcular lenses or contact lenses, and go by brands such as Verisye and Visian. It's important to know about your available options even if it means having "something" in your eyes to keep your vision perfect.
So what's the main difference between this and ordinary contact lenses? Well implantable lenses are permanent. This means once the eye surgeon will have installed these lenses, you will never have the need to take them off. Basically with a simple add-on you will have a 20/20 vision permanently. If you are used to contact lenses, then you should know that after wearing lenses for a long time they tend to dry up and your eyes don't feel comfortable. Don't worry, these lenses are even smaller than ordinary contact lenses so that your eyes can easily breathe.
You're probably wondering how this procedure works if you have to wear implantable lenses permanently. Well what happens is the surgeon is going to insert the implantable lens onto the colored portion of your eye which is the iris. The lenses are inserted after an incision has been made in the eye. The difference between this incision and the lasik incision is it will repair itself over time. Of course during the process the surgeon will use local anesthetic to minimize the feeling of pain during the surgery.
Like any other surgical procedure, the success rate of the operation is not 100%. So how successful can this operation be? Well you'll be happy to know the success rate is extremely high. Depending on what type of lens that is used for your eyes, the success rate of the surgery will vary between 92 to 95% which is a pretty good result. In fact implantable lenses have an additional advantage because they are reversible unlike its laser surgery counterpart lasik. If any complications were to occur during the surgery are after the surgery the lenses can easily be removed by a postsurgery unlike most laser vision corrections. Although the surgery is reversible there are some complications that may cause permanent damage. Unfortunately no matter how great the surgery may sound risks of infections and complications are always going to be present. some of these risks include inflammation, infection and cataracts. In most cases this surgery complications will include severe vision loss, night driving problems and eye optic nerve damage. Basically if anything goes wrong during the surgery you could end up with a vision worse than before the surgery. Implantable lenses is still considered a new technology so many long-term effects and potential risks are still unknown by many eye surgeons. Once you are diagnosed with vision loss such as myopia, hyperopia or presbyopia you always have to wear glasses to correct your vision unless you choose lasik. But if you are not eligible for lasik and you do not want to wear her glasses or contact lenses every day for the rest of your life implantable lenses could be a possible alternative. It will save you the hassle of having to put contact lenses or glasses every morning and take them off every night.
