Lasik Astigmatism - An Elliptical Danger

Ever heard of lasik astigmatism? Neither have I and that's because it does not exist but there is a relation between lasik and astigmatism. when you reach a certain level of myopia there is always a possibility that you develop also astigmatism and we will define what it is in a few moments. But before that it's important to know your level of astigmatism or have your eye surgeon check if you have a serious condition of astigmatism. Lasik astigmatism is only together because whenever you will go for a lasik procedure, chances are the surgeon will check if you have astigmatism and how serious it is if you do.

To put it simple, lasik astigmatism and astigmatism are the same and that long word is just fancy for saying you do not seek clearly. So logically everybody who has glasses necessarily have astigmatism. that's not true, although you may have a bad vision astigmatism is mostly related to the shape of your eyes. instead of having a circular cornea, astigmatism changes your cornea's shape to be more elliptical. This can definitely cause surgical complications because as you are aware the surgery is based on reshaping the cornea so the more elliptical it is, the harder it will be to reshape the cornea to its regular form.

In fact most surgeries such as lasik, custom lasik, PRK, lasek, epi-lasik and CK can correct lasik astigmatism but most eye surgeons consider it much harder than if they had correct myopia or hyperopia. These cornea based surgeries will prove to be pretty useful but there is a problem regarding patients who have attained a certain age. Unfortunately the older you are the more at risk you become of having surgical complications and that's because as we age, the natural lens of our eyes get clouded.

If you are a candidate with lasik astigmatism, you should seriously reconsider an alternative because the worst part in all of this is one surgery will definitely not be enough. Sometimes you'll have to go for a second surgery and even a third one and that's where it becomes dangerous. The forming a surgery on a virgin patient is already risky so having to perform a second surgery on the same patient can become dangerous because you may already have complications from the first surgery and not know it yet. Although technology has been well developed irregular astigmatism is still very hard to correct.

There is no perfect surgery yet but if you intend to choose a laser eye surgery with lasik astigmatism you you can definitely be assured that the success rate of your surgery will not be as high as standard patients who do not have astigmatism. There are always alternatives and although astigmatism can be corrected by lasers, talk with your eye surgeon about these alternatives. All you can do is hope and you surgery for astigmatism will come out soon where the success rate of the surgery will be close to a standard lasik surgery.
